The purpose of these guidelines is to inform potential applicants about the basic eligibility for consideration as well as the Foundation’s priorities and interests with respect to grantmaking.
The Revelstoke Community Foundation’s mission statement is: “To improve the quality of life for the people of Revelstoke by distributing the earnings from a permanent, ever-growing pool of funds.” The Foundation was incorporated November 25, 1998.
Basic eligibility to apply – Only those organizations that are qualified under Canada Revenue Agency Regulations may apply for grants made available from the Revelstoke Community Foundation:
- A charity registered under the Income Tax Act
- A Canadian amateur athletic association registered under the Income Tax Act
- A national arts service organisation registered under the Income Tax Act
- A housing corporation resident in Canada and exempt from tax under Part 1 of the Income Tax Act because of paragraph 149.1(1)(I)
- A municipality in Canada
- Her Majesty in Right of Canada or of a province.
Organizations that are uncertain of their charitable status may check the Charities Directorate at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/menu-eng.html.
The potential applicant will provide services that directly benefit the citizens of Revelstoke and immediate vicinity. There are ways by which unregistered charities may apply through a qualified sponsor or intermediary:
- There must be a written service contract between the registered charitable organisation and the non-qualified applicant (copies available upon request from the foundation).
- The non-qualified applicant must report back to the registered charitable organisation in sufficient detail to show that the latter can control the use of the funds and can account for them
- Service contracts between the two groups must contain the same information that Canada Customs & Revenue Agency recommends be in contracts between registered charitable organisations working through intermediary organisations outside of Canada, and
- There must be a clear link between the registered charitable organisation and the non-qualified applicant
Grants may be awarded for programs in: arts & culture, environment, health & welfare, children & families, sports & recreation, youth, seniors, education, community development and heritage conservation. In conjunction with Revelstoke Secondary School, scholarship applications will be dealt with at a later date. The Foundation will distribute income from the Community Futures Development Corporation Donor Advised Fund for purposes of assisting entrepreneurs with disabilities, enhancing access to educational opportunities for persons with disabilities and raising community awareness and understanding of issues relating to persons with disabilities, in Revelstoke and area.
Ineligible activities or those not normally considered for funding by the Foundation include deficit reduction, political or religious activities, retroactive funding, travel costs, fund raising campaigns, scientific research, etc.
The Foundation will favour applications that address themselves to:
- Emerging needs
- Enabling charitable organisations that in the opinion of the Foundation are performing essential services to reduce costs, increase efficiencies and otherwise become more self-sufficient
- New and more effective ways of dealing with problems
- Realising unusual opportunities or meeting urgent needs in the community
The Foundation may, in determining which applicants receive funding, give particular consideration to the following criteria:
- Degree of potential benefit to the community served
- Degree of volunteer participation and citizen involvement in the program
- Level of co-operation and co-ordination with other programs in the same field
- Reasonable assurance that the amount the Foundation can grant is sufficient to encourage the results sought
- Seriousness of the need
- Support of projects which can demonstrate a capacity or potential to be self sustaining
- Use of local suppliers and human resources
- Where Foundation funding can attract matching or supplementary funding
- You may be asked to provide your most recent financial statement

Every effort will be made to inform applicants of the Foundation’s decisions in writing within 30 days of closing date for applications.
Grant recipients will be expected to meet the following requirements:
- agree to public recognition i.e. local media coverage, attendance at Foundation functions, etc.
- meet reporting requirements
- perform self evaluation
- participate in Foundation evaluation
